Forced and artificial, but a bravura pastiche of some main currents of SF. The sudden ending is annoying; I can't think of any non-pretentious reason for it.
Thinking about trying this for my upper level classes
I'd read 'Seven-Day Terror' in some anthology long ago, and had never encountered Lafferty elsewhere. I still think that story is among the best things here; but there's a lot of good stuff, and some really interesting techniques. Love the way he challenges genre conventions (how did he end up classified as SF anyway? He's closer to Pynchon than Asimov), but maybe some of the ideas are a little thin?
